This MS-B36 Doomsday, in homage to G1 Megatron by Magic Square (MS-Toys, a 3rd party transformer studio focusing on pocket size toys), is another shot in the market. According to the recent reviews it might be the legends-class figure closest to the image of G1 Megatron.
This figure transform into a laser pistrol.

Got it for my MP MS Bruticus and very happy with it. Looks great in his hand in both bot and gun mode!

I'd like to start by mentioning what this figure includes- two extra face plates, the silencer attachment and the stabilizing brace(best I can describe it, I'm not big on shooting) and that's it. No chains, mace, swords, etc. I'm fine with this, though I wish I got the extra hands other versions of this figure received. Expressive hands are great with these figures, and the inclusion of faces but exclusion of the hands feels off.
I must admit I WANT this to be a 5 star figure. The robot mode is excellent in that it's articulated well, looks amazing and has some weight to it. The gun mode is amazing in that it looks that good even without attachments but once they're added, it's just an absolute joy to have in a collection. The part that falls short is the transformation and a few of the nuanced movements you need to do to get there, and how it makes the gun mode suffer.
Having the Optimus from magic square I already knew the legs would be more complicated thanimagined. These are far more tight in the clearance needed to move some bits. It would not be a stretch to say the legs explode. The arms need a rotation that is possible if the hands are positioned correctly but again, very tight clearance. I count those as minor issues, but there is one area I cannot deny is frustrating.
When you have the arms and chest forming the barrel, and the legs are forming the handle, getting the arms and chest lined up to connect can be a nightmare. Beyond that, the arms have two small sections that join to form where the scope rests and they don't seem to line up. After multiple attempts, I believe the "wiggle room" of all the components are fighting my ability to line them up. There's a lot going on in this transformation which leads to issues like this. To add to this, the cod piece has two small parts on the side which must fold in. Once the are folded in, they are so hard to get loose I needed a tool.
While that seems extremely negative, after the first attempt the transformation is easy to follow, minus the barrel to handle mentioned. I'd say it suffers from a steep learning curve. I cannot complain about the results though. Beautiful design all around.
No regrets adding this to my collection, especially with how clean it looks from every angle in both modes. Though I complain, I'd buy this again in an instant.

I bought this guy bc I wanted a toon accurate Megatron in robot mode in my collection. I could have gone the Newage route since I already owned the toy version and absolutely love him. However, the price Magic Square is offering and me wanting something different tempted me to make this purchase. The only thing that was holding me back with Magic Square was that I thought the upper torso on him looks a bit too big and his transformation and alt mode just wasn't well designed. Anyway, here is what I thought of him in hand in comparison to Newage and it's higher price point.
In hand, he looks damn good in robot mode. His upper torso, which I thought was too big and out of proportion before, actually looks correct and toon accurate. The material is not bad, slightly hard/soft plastic but not really as gummy as the ones Magic Square uses on all their current Legends scale figures. Articulation is pretty good. Paint, or what little there is, is just okay as the red on the elbows wasn't painted on straight. As for transformation, it's terrible as I have expected from all the videos I have seen. The alt mode looks okay, but not as nice as the Newage's. There are some QC issues. The leg joints are a little loose and some of the tab in the legs don't fit as tightly as I would have like. For $45, I think it's an okay price, though I think $40 would have been better. You do get all the accessories but the only want I use is the different faces.
I have always thought that he was too beefy and that Newage's Megatron looks better. However, now that I have both in hand to compare to, I think he looks proportionally correct, while the Newage's just looks too skinny. Newage is charging about $10 more and I think that is a fair price. For the extra $10, you get better paint job, better quality, better material, better design, and both modes look pretty good. One thing I really like about Newage is the head sculpt bc it's more pleasant to look at, while the Magic Square has a very bloated looking face.
So do I recommend him. Yes, but with some caveats. If you want a toon accurate Megatron and will pose him in robot mode only, then yes, I recommend him wholeheartedly. If you want a fun transformation Megatron with great quality material and paint job, you want both modes to look good, and you have a little extra cash to spend, then I would recommend Newage's. If you have a lot of money, then I recommend the best of both world, Magic Square in toon deco, and Newage in toy deco. If you were to ask me which is the better figure in terms of toon looks alone, then I will have to say Magic Square hands down.
